Blizzy and Angel are Parents

Puppies

Here is the page that I know a lot of you have been waiting for. Blizzy and Angel became very proud parents on May 23, 2004.

The first little guy above is Plato. He was the first born and the biggest of the 3 puppies. He also is the only one with straight fur like Angel. Plato came to stay with us for a week before he went to his new family. He is a feisty little guy like his daddy and very smart. I know he will be happy with his new family and that they will love him very much.

The middle picture is Skirball. He was the runt of the litter and almost didn't make it. During his birth, he got about half way out and then got stuck. Brandy, Angel's aunt, had to help him out the rest of the way and then give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in order to revive him because he was not breathing at all. So him and Brandy have a very special bond between them. Skirball's fur is quite fluffy and wavy like Blizzy's.

The third picture is Meilani. She was the only little girl of the litter. She is a little brat, but then, aren't most girls? She thinks she can do whatever she pleases whenever she wants. But I'm sure as she gets older, she will learn that things don't quite work that way and will make a great pet for a nice family.

It was quite unusual to get all 3 puppies white in color (actually Skirball has a hint of tan to him) because white is a genetic defect in miniature schnauzers. And especially since there are black and white and salt and pepper colors in both Blizzy's and Angel's ancestry. We were told that if we got one white puppy, we would be lucky.

Angel sure was miserable by the end of her pregnancy, as you can tell by the first picture. That was taken the night before the puppies were born. She actually waddled like a duck when she walked because she is so small herself and then to have 3 puppies inside her. She didn't want to eat or anything.

As you can see in the second picture, she really didn't care what you did to her and she loved being held, which is something that normally she doesn't like. She would rather be down running around. But that night Mommy was holding her for at least 20 minutes and she never made any attempt to leave her arms. Mommy said she could even feel the puppies moving around as Angel laid against her.

In the third picture, you can see how low her belly was hanging. Her daddy, Steve, even made the comment that he had a feeling the puppies were going to be born the next day. And he was right. My daddy, Mark, happened to be off of work that day and was able to go over there and watch the birth. I guess that was quite an experience.

Here are some pictures the day the puppies were born. Angel was such a good mom for being a first-timer. Knowing her feisty personality, we weren't sure how she was going to handle having puppies and taking care of them. But she was better than any of us expected. She stayed with the puppies, licked and cleaned them, but yet, was OK when anyone wanted to touch or pick them up.
